What is a Behaviorist?
What is a Behaviorist?

what is a behaviorist?
We're often asked, " What is the difference between a trainer and a behaviorist?"

Trainers generally work with dogs and owners on obedience issues - stopping jumping, learning obedience commands , performing tricks, learning to greet people in a relaxed manner, etc..

Behaviorists concentrate on more mind/action/drive oriented behavior problems. Problems might include aggression, fear, separation anxiety, housetraining troubles, excessive barking and obsessive-compulsive disorders. A variety of behavior modification techniques are used. A behaviorist will develop a personalized treatment program for the dog and owner. Often, the behaviorist will set up a situation to elicit the problem behavior and teach the owner and dog alternative ways of responding to the problem. It's important to remember that like any program that deals with complex psychological issues, the owner must work with the dog. Just like a person in therapy needs to follow the treatment plan to make progress and maintain any improvements .

At White Mountain K9 Academy we're both  trainers AND behaviorists. How may we serve you?
